ST. MARY MAGDALENE PARISH CHURCH
Over the last year, we have worked towards the gradual re-opening of the church as restrictions and guidance changed.
We are again hooding regular Sunday Services, as well as baptisms, weddings and funerals.
This has been done in a cautious and measured manner, taking account of the risks that still exist from Covid-19.
The safety of those using our church is paramount in the decision-making process, and trust you will understand when appropriate precautions are taken
Whilst we have re-opened most of our pews as normal, we retain a few for those who may still feel the need for social distancing.
We are aiming to return to providing access to the building throughout the week, bur internal works may prevent this at times.

Since 2000, monies raised have gone twice to adapting the wooden doors under the tower for new heating systems, bell-ropes, flower vases and storage boxes, re-gilding of the weather cock, installation of CCTV, altar kneelers, information bat boards for visitors' use and display boards. SOUTH MOLTON AND DISTRICT CHRISTIAN AID
The Christian Aid Charity is a partnership of people, churches and local organisations committed to ending poverty worldwide, helping people of all faiths or none. We seek to eradicate extreme poverty by tackling its root causes.
Money goes to loca l partners, not governments, and helps with food, clean water, hygiene kits, humanitarian assistance, protecting women at risk of violence, education and alleviating the effects of global warming.
The South Molton and District committee raises funds for this cause. Our latest fundraising project is a Recipe Book which is on sale locally. The proceeds from this will go to help those suffering in Afghanistan.
For information contact Lynne Miller 01769 579593
OPEN THE BOOK in South Molton primary schools. Beginning with just one group in Bedford in 1999, Open the Book now has more than 17,000 volunteer storytellers who between them reach 850,000 primary school children in more than 3,000 schools in Britain. It has now spread to Africa!
Two of those schools are in South Molton, our two primary schools, where a team, made up of Christians from the town’s Parish and Baptist Churches, tell Bible stories in 10-15 minute drama presentations, using props, costumes and scenery. We all find it rewarding and enjoyable and we trust it is a valuable way to bring the Gospel to the children.
During the COVID restrictions, we are sending the school a video of a bible story each week. The teachers have requested this and tell us they are warmly received by the children!
If you’re interested to help, contact Mike or Lynne 01769 579593.

This long established local charity is able to help anyone in the South Molton area struck by adversity, especially those unfortunate enough to be not so well-off, with a timely cash donation.
Examples include prompt help for a family suddenly and unexpectedly rendered homeless and paying the travel costs of a hard-pressed parent to visit a seriously ill child in hospital.
With local trustees drawn from the churches and other community organisations, there is no bureaucracy involved – help can be immediate and complete confidentiality is observed.
Requests are always welcomed, as of course are donations.

I am Maria Gavan and I am one of four Lollipop Ladies that work in South Molton. There are ladies, and men, who work as lollipop people all around North Devon.
I am doing this tree for all the ladies and men who are brave for doing this job in all weathers. I do the job for all the children and their smiles and laughter, building bonds with them, to know that we are not strangers. We are there to help them to cross the road safely.
I feel privileged to be doing this job, I have done this tree so people know we are there to help adults and children to cross the road and to be safe.

SOUTH MOLTON ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB was formed in 1900 and has always played at their home at Old Alswear Road. The club has entered and competed every season since then, with the only interruptions coming by way of World War ll and foot and mouth in 2001.
During WW1, the Yanks turned the pitch into a baseball diamond complete with a pitcher mound in the centre. South Molton was one of just six teams that made up the first North Devon league when it was formed in 1904.
‘The Images’ is the nickname that has been traced back pretty much throughout the club’s history, the exact source and background as why this is relevant has yet to be determined and the search goes on.
The football club now has one adult team and a junior section with over 160 members ranging from 5 - 16 years old and a U11 girls team.

Bad Bevensen is a town in the north of the district Uelzen in Lower Saxony, south of Hamburg,Germany. It is situated to the east of the Lüneburg Heath and a tributary of the Elbe; the Ilmenau river, flows through it. In 1964, hot water springs were discovered near Bevensen when Shell was drilling for oil. The water was used for a spa in 1968 and in 1976, the town was renamed Bad Bevensen. South Molton signed the twinning charter with Bevensen in 1967, at the same time as Barnstaple with Uelzen and Bideford with Ebsdorf. Representatives from all three North Devon towns went to Uelzen in October 2017 to celebrate the 50thAnniversary of the signing of the charters. We would welcome anyone interested in our twinning, for more information phone the secretary on 01769 574383.

Like many choirs we had a break during lockdown. We re-commenced rehearsals in September with Covid security measures in place. The South Molton Community Garden
The aim of the project is to provide a safe, happy and healthy environment for communal gardening . The plot is in the Sheep Fair Field against the cemetery wall, a lovely open site with views over the town and Exmoor.
We have 36 individual plots where members can grow for themselves , also several large communal areas where we all work together, growing bulkier crops to share at harvest time.
The garden offers different things to different people, for some it's just being in a lovely place out in the fresh air and enjoying Nature and, for some, a place to go as a family with their young children. Some really enjoy the camaraderie and making new friends and others go for a bit of peace and quiet when they know no-one else will be there!
All of us have discovered how wonderful it is to have fresh vegetables on our plates that we have grown ourselves. You just can't beat it!
We do fundraising to support our project and are well equipped with a tool shed, field kitchen and compost too.

Fund raising has been curtailed due to Covid 19 but, normally, generous donations and money from fund raising events enable the League to support staff and patients by purchasing specialised medical equipment, furniture, TVs etc.and many other items. The garden has been enhanced with new seating so that patients can enjoy some time away from the wards. Each month a non-denominational service is held for patients, relatives and their friends. Although the bed number has been reduced the Outpatient department and Physiotherapy department is very busy and many items have been purchased for their use. For more details contact D. Goodman, Chairman on 01769 572854.

St Mary Magdalene has eight bells which are about 205 years old and were rehung in 1937. The tenor is the heaviest bell at 24cwt.
Cliff Cockram is the Tower Captain and would welcome any people who would be interested in becoming bell ringers.
There are now seven regular ringers with two new learners and occasional support from other towers. We ring for Services, Weddings, Funerals and other special occasions.
The bell ropes have been in place for two years now and are much appreciated. The next project is to carpet the main floor to warm the room up and add individual small numbered mats.
As our bells are heavy, we are visiting towers with lighter bells for practice. This help with our raising and lowering the bell and keeps other towers in use.
We all enjoy ringing and we hope the town folk enjoy our efforts as well.
Cliff can be contacted on 01769 574763 or 07792 411414
The 'Flower Ladies' of South Molton Parish Church are a small group - always looking for more volunteers - who, in normal times, work on a fortnightly rota to have a pedestal arrangement and altar flowers of fresh flowers in our church.
Sadly, this has not been possible during the past two years, for obvious reasons. However, we have been able to decorate the church in this way using a variety of arrangements in artificial flowers.
Hopefully we shall be back to normal soon.
If anyone would like to join our band, please 'phone Tessa on 001769 574763 or Angela on 01769 572584
South Molton Striders is an informal group of friends who enjoy walking short, medium and longer distances locally, and the company that this engenders.
We meet every Monday morning at 10.30am at the top end of the Central Car Park, and at other times as published in our walking programme.
We provide short walks specifically for people who wish to start walking to improve their health, medium walks to progress to when you are ready, and longer walks every fortnight for those who have already progressed and are able to take on more challenging terrains.
After each walk we usually retire to a local hostelry for refreshments and a social natter.
There are no fees to pay, and you will be made very welcome if you wish to join us on one of our walks.
Our walking programme, published every three months, is available in the Amory Centre, as well as on our Facebook page.
For further information please contact John Probert on 01769 574511.

New members are always welcomed and you do not need to be able to speak French! Several fund-raising and social events are normally held each year: a French meal, barbecue, Christmas meal, a walk on Exmoor, a trip out.
Our French friends are planning to visit South Molton 26th– 29th May 2022, if you would like to host a visitor or just join in the weekend, contact the chairman, Margaret White tel: 01769 573558.
South Molton u3a is the local branch of an organisation for those of a 'certain age' who are no longer in full-time employment. We meet regularly to enjoy a wide range of activities ranging from singing, scrabble, mahjong and poetry to more active ones like rambling, skittles and skittles. Some activities are more academic e.g. Shakespeare and science, while others are more practical like patchwork and cook 'n' eat. We also enjoy theatre and garden visits.
Monthly coffee mornings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at Filleigh Village Hall. We are a self-help organisation and so make use of our own skills or revisit old interests or develop new ones. But most of all we have fun.
If you would like to find out more about us, ring the our Promotions Officer Gill Saunders on 01769 572005 or email PR@southmoltonu3a.co.uk or visit our website: www.southmoltonu3a.co.uk
We have 9 single age classes – many with waiting lists. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and nurturing school, ensuring all pupils reach their full potential.
All of our classrooms are modern, very spacious, flooded with natural light and far reaching views across our outdoor areas and the town itself. This makes for a calm and industrious environment in which the children thrive.
We have been continuing to enhance our extensive outdoor areas with the arrival of our four new chickens, developing our new forest school areas and our vegetable and flower growing areas. The children use these areas to explore and gain a greater knowledge of science and the natural world around them. We also have a wonderful trim trail for the children to play on as well as lots of space for physical activity.
We pride ourselves on our community links and have enjoyed being back out in the community for trips to Exmoor Zoo, Paignton Zoo, Hakeford Wood, Exeter Museum, Beam House, Northam Burrows and South Molton swimming pool. We have also been back to the church for our annual Harvest Festival and look forward to celebrating Christmas or carol service at the church.
ST.JOHN AMBULANCE BADGERS have not been able to meet since the pandemic began. We hope to restart soon.
St JOHNS GARDEN CENTRES are North Devon’s leading garden centres with a full range of garden plants, trees, shrubs and roses for every season of the year.
At this time of year we have a huge selection of Christmas decorations, lights, crackers, giftware, potted plants, Cyclamen, Poinsettia, Azalea, Orchids, Christmas Cactus, fresh and artificial Christmas trees, wreaths and mistletoe.
When spring arrives, we have a vast range of bedding plants, compost, garden buildings, sheds and greenhouses and all the accessories for you to create the very best garden.
St Johns is pleased to support the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary Magdalene Church in South Molton and wish all our customers at both Ashford and Barnstaple a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. God Bless.
Though our buildings have been closed, and we cannot yet use them fully, we are still a church, meeting virtually for prayer services and fellowship, and caring for our community.
We have a short Sunday service at 9.15am. and we are now holding Baptisms, weddings and funerals.
Please be patient, and understand that the safety of those using our churches has to be paramount in the decision-making process.
Remember a church is its people, not the building, important though it is to us.
God is wherever you are and can be worshipped wherever you are.

I began my career 46 years ago as an apprentice upholsterer with Harrods of London. Five years later I qualified as a traditional upholsterer and continued my career with Harrods for a further eight years. For the next 20 years, I ran a successful upholstery business in London working for various department stores including Harrods, John Lewis, Selfridges and Heals of Tottenham Court Road. During this time I also undertook on-site repairs and installation of modular furniture for three well-known French furniture designers, Ligne Roset, Roche Bobois and Gránge. In 2009, I relocated with my wife and daughters to North Devon where I worked for eight years for Jigsaw Furniture Project in Barnstaple until its closure in 2017.
I offer upholstery services from my shop, The Upholstery Workroom, at 80 South Street in South Molton, and am happy to visit you in your home to provide an obligation free quotation for any upholstery work you require from repairs to full re-upholstery and recovers on both traditional and modern furniture.

Our building is still there but St. Joseph’s community is scattered around. In spite of the way things are, we still have hope and faith; we are in God’s hands. We pray that all people throughout the world will have light, hope and comfort this Christmas.
“I’m spending Christmas with Jesus this year”
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny lights like Heaven’s stars reflecting in the snow.
The sight is so spectacular – please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear
But the sound of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here
I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring
For it’s beyond description to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart
But I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart.
So be happy for me dear ones, you know I hold you dear
And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I sent you each a special gift from my heavenly home above,
I sent you each a memory of my undying love.
After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold,
It always was most important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other as my Father said to do,
For I can’t count the blessing of love He has for each of you.
So have a merry Christmas and wipe away that tear,
Remember I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
